BASIC INFORMATION: WHAT AND WHO

Who is the conference designed for?

The conference is relevant to individuals in research-oriented disciplines who teach at levels ranging from undergraduates through to faculty and professionals. It should be particularly useful to PIs and other individuals at institutions who are required by their funding agencies to provide instruction in RCR. Both new and experienced instructors of research ethics will benefit from attending.

What will I gain by participating?

In addition to what you learn at the conference (see schedule), you will receive extensive curricular resources including syllabi, PowerPoint presentations, handouts for students, in-class exercises, cases for discussion, and an extensive bibliography.

Who typically attends?

This event may be unlike most conferences you have attended. All participants have a common goal: to return to their institution and implement or improve instruction in RCR.  However, beyond that they are quite diverse.

At our past trainer-of-trainers events, participants have represented a broad range of schools – from large, research-intensive universities, to small colleges – as well as professional societies, and government agencies. Most participants are faculty, administrators, or staff.

Roughly half of the group typically comes from the biomedical sciences, although individuals from other disciplines, including engineering, business, the social sciences, and humanities, also have found the experience to be an outstanding one.

The majority of attendees have been from institutions in the United States, although participants from other countries are welcome to apply. Previous international attendees have hailed from Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Costa Rica, Kenya, India, Sri Lanka, and South Africa, among others.

APPLICATION PROCESS

How can I attend?

Participation in the conference is a selective process. We accept applications on a rolling basis. The conference is limited to 40 seats, so apply now!

How do I apply?

Submit a completed application form.

Why do I need to apply?

Conference participants seem to benefit a lot from their interactions with others who are committed to providing instruction in professional development and/or RCR. This application process helps us to ensure that all attendees are committed to those goals, thus providing the best learning environment aznd resources possible for all participants.

How are participants selected?

It is a two-part process:

First, individuals need to agree to comply with all three of the following:

1. Attend the entire conference.

2. Establish or substantially improve an existing course in RCR and/or professional development at their institution by March 2013, providing training to a minimum of 25 persons per year.

3. Evaluate the training implemented and share those data (in aggregate form) with the conference organizers.

Second, among those who meet the above requirements, preference is given to individuals who

1. have a detailed plan for implementing training

2. will teach the most individuals

3. will train a significant number of individuals from underserved populations

4. show evidence of institutional support for this project (e.g., funding, release time, etc.)

When will I be notified?

We will confirm receipt of your application. If you do not receive confirmation within 24 hours, please contact us.

You will be notified about the outcome of your application within 2 weeks.
